Indication and Usage: LEXIVA is indicated in combination with other antiretroviral agents for the treatment of HIV infection. The PI-experienced–patient study was not large enough to reach a definitive conclusion that LEXIVA/ritonavir and lopinavir/ritonavir are clinically equivalent. Once-daily administration of LEXIVA plus ritonavir is not recommended for PI-experienced patients or any pediatric patients. LEXIVA does not cure HIV or prevent passing HIV to others.
Important Safety Information: You should not take LEXIVA if you have had an allergic reaction to LEXIVA or AGENERASE® (amprenavir). Tell your healthcare provider if you have liver or kidney problems, have diabetes or hemophilia, are allergic to sulfa medicines, or are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding. With family and friends in your corner, you're committed to this regimen. But your treatment should fit into your schedule, not take it over. Some of the benefits of LEXIVA described below might make it easier to balance HIV treatment with your busy life.
LEXIVA is often taken with another HIV medicine called Norvir® (ritonavir). Norvir boosts the effect of LEXIVA by making it last longer in the body. LEXIVA can be taken with half of the usual boosting dose of Norvir—100 mg (1 pill) versus 200 mg (2 pills). Half the amount of Norvir means that you may have fewer pills to take and keep track of every day, as well as more convenience.
You might be able to take LEXIVA with Norvir just once a day if you haven't taken a protease inhibitor before. Plus, LEXIVA does not have to be taken with food. You can eat and drink whenever you like when taking LEXIVA.
Your healthcare provider can help you decide the best way for you to take LEXIVA.
